Bathing Instructions for Amazon Parrots Using Showerbird®

Why Bathing is Important for
Amazon Parrots 🌎

  • Amazon parrots originate from Central and South America, including regions of the Amazon Basin, where the climate is warm, humid, and tropical with frequent rainfall. Regular bathing supports healthy feathers, skin, and natural behaviors.

Showerbird® recreates this experience with a fine, circular mist that gently settles onto feathers—like natural rain.

đź’¦ Regular bathing may help support feather condition and comfort.

Setting Up a Safe Bathing Environment

  • Place your bird on a stable T-stand, wall perch, or tension rod perch
  • Ensure all surfaces are secure and slip-resistant
  • A small towel or washcloth can improve grip if needed

Using the Showerbird® Shower Mat

The included Showerbird® mat can be used:

  • on the bathroom floor to reduce slipping from residual mist
  • along the tub edge for safer footing
  • inside the tub or shower to stabilize stands and help prevent scratching

A calm, stable environment helps birds feel more comfortable and confident during bathing.

Water & Mist Settings đź’¦

Use lukewarm water adjusted to your bird’s comfort level.

Showerbird® creates a continuous gentle mist designed to remain calm and consistent without harsh pressure changes.

For birds new to bathing:

  • begin by lightly misting the surrounding area
  • allow mist near the feet first
  • gradually direct mist above the bird so water falls naturally like rainfall

The mist can safely be guided:

  • from low to high
  • from high to low
  • gently toward the back of the bird

This flexibility allows you to follow your bird’s comfort level while maintaining a more natural bathing experience.

Introducing Your Amazon to Showerbird®

Start slowly.

Bathing should feel like a calm environmental experience — not a forced event.

Allow your bird to:

  • observe the mist
  • approach voluntarily
  • engage at their own pace

Keep early sessions:

  • short
  • quiet
  • calm
  • pressure-free

Some Amazon parrots begin bathing immediately.

Others require patience and repeated positive exposure.

Both responses are completely normal.

With consistency, many companion birds gradually begin recognizing bathing as a comfortable and familiar part of their environment.

tart slowly—this is a process, not an event

  • Let your bird observe and approach at their own pace
  • Keep early sessions calm, short, and unforced

Some Amazons will engage immediately. Others take time.
Both are completely normal.

With consistency, captive birds begin to recognize this as a natural experience and settle into it.

Bathing Duration & Frequency

Typical bathing sessions range from:

5–15 minutes

Whenever possible, allow your bird to decide when they are finished.

For most Amazon parrots:

  • bathing 2–4 times weekly works well
  • some birds may enjoy more frequent misting, especially in dry indoor environments

Consistency often matters more than intensity.

Showerbird® tends to work best as part of a regular routine rather than occasional forced bathing sessions.

What Healthy Bathing Behavior Looks Like đź’¦

When a bird is comfortable, you’ll often notice clear signs of engagement:

  • wings spreading outward
  • feathers fluffing up
  • turning side to side in the mist
  • active, relaxed movement

These behaviors closely mirror how many birds interact with rainfall in natural environments.

An Emotional Bonding Experience

Bathing is more than part of a care routine—it can become one of the most natural bonding experiences you share with your bird.

In the wild, birds bathe in the comfort of their flock and environment. At home, gentle bathing moments can help create that same sense of safety, trust, and companionship between you and your bird.

Because sometimes bonding isn’t about training or toys.

Sometimes it’s simply being present together in a calm, natural moment. 🪶💦

Drying

  • Allow your bird to air dry in a warm, draft-free environment
  • Avoid towel drying unless necessary
  • Morning or early afternoon is ideal

Clean-Up:

  • Wipe down any wet surfaces in the bathing area to prevent mold or slipping.
  • Drain all water from the Showerbird hose by holding the quick-connect end down allowing the water to pour out.  Once drained hang over the shower rod for air drying.

Additional Tips for Amazon Parrot Owners

  • Observe Your Bird: Every parrot has preferences. Some enjoy daily misting; others prefer every few days.
  • Molting Periods: Increase frequency during molts to help loosen pin feathers.
  • Avoid Soaking: Misting should dampen, not drench. Over-soaking can chill or stress the bird.
  • Hydration & Humidity: Regular misting helps maintain skin health, especially in dry indoor climates.

Important Notes

  • Begin with a slow, gradual introduction
  • Always prioritize comfort and control
  • Adjust water temperature slightly based on species and natural climate
