Bathing Instructions for Macaws Using Showerbird®

Environmental Background:
Macaws in the Wild 🌎

  • Native to Central and South America, including countries like Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia.
  • Natural habitat: humid lowland rainforests, river basins, and tropical savannahs.
  • Macaws experience frequent, warm rains, high humidity, and rich foliage — they naturally bathe by flying through rain or rubbing against wet leaves.
  • Regular bathing helps them maintain vibrant feathers, remove dust and dander, and support natural preening behavior.

Setup Instructions

Bathing Frequency:

  • 2–4 times per week, depending on the bird’s preference and the humidity level of your home.
  • Daily misting is ideal in dry climates or during molting seasons.
  • Observe your macaw’s behavior to determine their comfort — many macaws actively seek out water and will show eagerness when it’s bath time.

Setup Steps:

Setup Instructions:

  1. Attach the Showerbird® securely to your sink faucet or shower diverter using the provided quick-connect
  2. Ensure a steady water flow that creates a gentle mist through the wand — it should replicate light rainforest rainfall.
  3. Place your macaw on a safe bathing perch:
    • Use a non-slip t-stand or shower perch inside a tub or walk-in shower.
    • Ensure the perch is sturdy and at a comfortable height, allowing the mist to fall gently over your bird.

Bathing Technique

Water Temperature:

  • Use lukewarm water: around 95°F to 100°F (35–38°C).
  • Never use hot or cold water — it can cause stress or health issues.
  • Test water on the inside of your wrist before beginning.

Bathing Process:

  1. Begin slowly: Let your macaw observe the mist before stepping in.
  2. Adjust wand position to allow mist to gently drift downward, simulating light rainfall — avoid aiming directly at the bird’s face or vent.
  3. Mist for 5–15 minutes, depending on your macaw’s engagement.
    • Many macaws will raise their wings, bob, or chirp when enjoying it.
    • Avoid over-misting if the bird seems agitated or cold.
  4. Encourage natural behavior — allow your macaw to move in and out of the mist to self-regulate.

After-Bath Care:

  • Allow your macaw to air dry in a warm, draft-free room.
  • Provide a dry perch and space for your macaw to preen.
  • If your bird is soaked, you may gently pat with a soft towel, but most macaws prefer to dry naturally.

Habitat Simulation Tips:

Create an immersive rainforest-like environment during bathing:

  • Play ambient rainforest sounds (optional).
  • Add safe greenery or natural-looking foliage around the bathing area (out of reach).
  • Use a humidifier in your bird’s room if you live in a dry or air-conditioned climate.
  • Avoid chemical cleaners or scented products in the bathing area — macaws are sensitive to airborne toxins.

Safety & Maintenance Notes:

  • Always supervise your macaw during bathing.
  • Ensure all equipment (perch, wand, hose) is stable and secure.
  • Never force bathing — it should be a positive experience.
