Bathing Instructions for Amazon Parrots Using Showerbird®
Why Bathing is Important for
Amazon Parrots 🌎
Amazon parrots originate from Central and South America, including regions of the Amazon Basin, where the climate is warm, humid, and tropical with frequent rainfall. Regular bathing supports healthy feathers, skin, and natural behaviors.
Showerbird® recreates this experience with a fine, circular mist that gently settles onto feathers—like natural rain.
Shower Setup
- Place your bird on a T-stand, wall perch, or tension rod perch inside the shower
- Ensure all perches are stable and slip-resistant
- A washcloth or small towel can improve grip
- Use the included Showerbird® Shower Mat:
- On the bathroom floor to prevent slipping from residual mist
- Inside the tub/shower to stabilize a stand and prevent scratching
- Draped over the tub edge to create a safe walking surface
Water & Mist
- Use lukewarm water (adjust slightly for your bird’s comfort)
- Showerbird® produces a consistent, gentle mist that does not vary in pressure
- The mist can be used flexibly and safely:
- Directed above the bird to fall like natural rain
- Gently guided from low to high or high to low
- Safely directed toward the back of the bird
This allows you to follow your bird’s comfort level while still maintaining a natural bathing experience.
Introducing Your Amazon to Showerbird®
- Start slowly—this is a process, not an event
- Let your bird observe and approach at their own pace
- Keep early sessions calm, short, and unforced
Some Amazons will engage immediately. Others take time.
Both are completely normal.
With consistency, captive birds begin to recognize this as a natural experience and settle into it.
Bathing Duration & Frequency
- Typical sessions: 5–15 minutes
- Let your bird decide when they are finished
- Offer bathing 2–4 times per week, or more if enjoyed
Showerbird® works best as a consistent routine—this is when you’ll see the biggest behavioral shift.
Drying
- Allow your bird to air dry in a warm, draft-free environment
- Avoid towel drying unless necessary
- Morning or early afternoon is ideal
Clean-Up:
- Wipe down any wet surfaces in the bathing area to prevent mold or slipping.
- Drain all water from the Showerbird hose by holding the quick-connect end down allowing the water to pour out. Once drained hang over the shower rod for air drying.
Additional Tips for Amazon Parrot Owners
- Observe Your Bird: Every parrot has preferences. Some enjoy daily misting; others prefer every few days.
- Molting Periods: Increase frequency during molts to help loosen pin feathers.
- Avoid Soaking: Misting should dampen, not drench. Over-soaking can chill or stress the bird.
- Hydration & Humidity: Regular misting helps maintain skin health, especially in dry indoor climates.
Important Notes
- Begin with a slow, gradual introduction
- Always prioritize comfort and control
- Adjust water temperature slightly based on species and natural climate
