Bathing Instructions for African Grey Parrots Using Showerbird

Environmental Background:
African Grey Parrots in the Wild 🌎

African Greys are native to the dense equatorial rainforests of Central and West Africa, including countries like the Congo, Ghana, and Cameroon. Their wild environment is characterized by:

  • High humidity
  • Frequent, warm rainfall
  • Thick canopy cover with filtered light
  • Access to natural mist and moisture from wet leaves and morning dew

Bathing in this environment helps African Greys keep their feathers clean, skin hydrated, and respiratory passages clear. Using Showerbird®, which simulates a gentle rainforest mist, is ideal for replicating this natural bathing experience in your home.

Bathing with Showerbird:
Step-by-Step for African Greys

Before You Begin

What you need:

  • Showerbird®
  • Showerbird® non-slip mat
  • A secure t-stand or non-slip shower perch

Setup Instructions

  1. Connect Showerbird® to your sink faucet or shower diverter using the attached quick connect.
  2. Test the mist: Turn on water gently, a fine, rain-like mist sprays from the wand tip.
  3. Position the wand about 18–24 inches from where your bird will perch.
  4. Start low with a mist around the feet, progessing to see birds initial reaction.
  5. Once comfortable, ensure the wand is angled slightly above the bird, allowing mist to fall naturally like gentle rain.

Placing Your African Grey

  • Use a non-slip perch or t-stand in the tub or shower area.
  • Allow the bird to see and hear the mist first — African Greys are intelligent and cautious, so gradual introduction is important.
  • Place the bird on the perch once it shows curiosity or comfort.

Misting Process

  1. Keep water lukewarm – around 90–95°F (32–35°C).
  2. Mist for 5–10 minutes, depending on your bird’s behavior.
  3. Avoid direct misting of the face and vent – let your Grey move into the mist on its own.
  4. Look for signs of enjoyment:
    • Wing spreading
    • Tail fanning
    • Vocalizations or playfulness

If your bird turns away or looks distressed, lower the intensity or stop and try again another day.

How Often to Bathe

    • 2–3 times per week is ideal for most African Greys.
    • Increase to daily misting in:
      • Dry indoor climates (e.g., winter with heating)
      • Molting periods
      • Homes with low humidity

Humidity mimics their natural rainforest climate and helps prevent dry skin, itchiness, and feather plucking (a common behavioral issue in Greys).

After-Bath Care

  • Allow your African Grey to air dry in a warm, draft-free room.
  • Offer a clean towel-lined perch for comfort.
  • Do not use a blow dryer, especially ones with Teflon components (which are toxic to birds).
  • Provide time for preening, a natural grooming behavior that follows bathing.

Enhancing the Experience: Simulating the Rainforest

To enrich the bathing session and mirror the African rainforest environment:

  • Play ambient rainforest or bird calls to encourage natural behavior.
  • Add safe live or artificial foliage near the bathing area (keep out of reach to prevent chewing).
  • Use a humidifier in your bird’s room if you live in a dry climate.

Ensure filtered light or soft lighting during the bath — just like under the rainforest canopy.

Important Reminders

  1. Always interact with your bird during bathing.
  2. Never force your African Grey into the mist — it should be voluntary and positive.

Bathing is more than part of a care routine—it can become one of the most natural bonding experiences you share with your bird. In the wild, birds bathe in the comfort of their flock and environment. At home, gentle bathing moments can help create that same sense of safety, trust, and companionship between you and your bird. Because sometimes bonding isn’t about training or toys. Sometimes it’s simply being present together in a calm, natural moment. 🪶💦 my version no reply
